Everton FC on the Verge of Reacquiring Begovic Following Summer Transfer Moves
Begovic Returns to Everton FC
Asmir Begovic is closing in on a return to Everton FC, a year after he quit the club over financial issues. The goalkeeper played 46 matches for Queens Park Rangers last season but following the expiry of his contract at the Championship club, he is now set for a second stint with the Blues. The ECHO understands that Everton are hoping to seal a deal for Begovic with the 37-year-old free agent in what manager Sean Dyche and director of football Kevin Thelwell view as a potentially prudent acquisition.
Experienced Goalkeeper for Everton
Capped 63 times by Bosnia and Herzegovina, Begovic turned out 10 times for Everton during a spell between 2021-23, and with over 400 career appearances, he offers a wealth of experience as a popular and responsible senior pro to act as understudy to England number one Jordan Pickford. When Begovic departed Everton last summer, he exclusively told the ECHO:
- The business side is part of the game – I totally get that.
- Of course there are certain realities that I understand the club are in and we couldn’t come to an agreement.
- I cherished my time at Everton and I think I’m a better player for my time at Everton.
- The chance to represent Everton in any shape or form for the past two years has been a great honour.
Bringing back Begovic could enable Everton to explore the possibility of loaning out Joao Virginia to get more regular game time. The 24-year-old Portuguese goalkeeper impressed in three FA Cup outings for the Blues last season.
