Manilva Ecologists Call Attention to Gibraltar's Urbanization
Manilva's Environmental Alarm
The conservation group Verdemar Ecologistas en Acción has formally reported to the European Commission on the alarming decision made by the Government of Gibraltar to import stones from the town of Casares (Malaga). This effort aims at urbanizing the eastern face of the Peñón, necessitating an extraordinary 50,000 tons of stone from this Malaga locality. The urban project is inadvertently generating a dumping ground filled with waste.
Environmental Implications
The spokesperson for Verdemar, Antonio Muñoz, elaborated on these developments during a talk with SER Málaga. He noted, “After monitoring various sites both in Gibraltar and around the quarries of Manilva and Casares, we have seen definitive evidence of Gibraltar importing stones alongside other construction materials for this endeavor.” Furthermore, an investigation barge has been active for weeks, probing the seabed where new land will emerge, with concerns already hinting at possibly extending the area by 20 hectares beyond the currently acknowledged 10 hectares.
- This project takes place within a Special Conservation Area (ZEC) of the Eastern Strait.
- Transport trucks traveling from Casares quarries are supplying materials needed for the project.
