DFES Awards Celebrate Excellence

The Kimberley region was well represented at the 2024 Western Australian Fire and Emergency Services (WAFES) Awards, where volunteers achieved significant accolades. Two rescuers and the Broome Volunteer Fire and Rescue team were honored at a gala dinner in Perth on September 7.
The event acknowledged excellence in firefighting, emergency management, marine rescue, and the State Emergency Service.

Outstanding Achievements

  • Broome Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service received the firefighting team achievement award for responding to an extraordinary 400 incidents since March 2023.
  • DFES marine district officer Bec Benson earned the operational staff individual achievement award for her dedication to training future emergency services stars in the Pilbara and Kimberley.
  • Kununurra Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service volunteer Chais O'Dwyer won the firefighting youth achievement award for fostering teamwork and mentoring young volunteers.

Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner Darren Klemm AFSM praised the commitment of first responders in northern WA amid extreme challenges over recent years.
