DFES Awards Recognize Marine Rescue Group's Heroic Efforts
Bravery Recognized at WA Fire and Emergency Services Awards
A marine rescue group from Esperance has been honored with the marine rescue team achievement award at this year’s WA Fire and Emergency Services Awards. This recognition comes after the team saved five people stranded off the coast of Alexander Bay following a shark-related incident last October.
Saving Lives Against All Odds
- The crew faced strong winds and challenging swells during the rescue.
- It took four hours for the rescue vessel, Volunteer IV, to locate the damaged boat.
- The skipper maintained a steady speed to prioritize crew safety while reaching the distressed boat.
According to the award citation, the moonless night created a dark environment where rescuers relied on sound to reach the boat. After administering first aid, the crew successfully returned the survivors and their shark-damaged vessel to Esperance in approximately seven hours from the initial call.
Acknowledging Emergency Service Excellence
The WA Fire and Emergency Services Awards pay tribute to the inspirational contributions of emergency services volunteers and staff over the past year. Fifteen awards were presented across three categories—individual, team, and youth—at a gala dinner in Perth on Saturday evening.
Emergency services minister Stephen Dawson praised the winners, highlighting the unpredictability of their responsibilities. He also encouraged public involvement in future nominations for deserving individuals and teams.
