Arriva Makes Strategic Train Transfers Across Regions

Arriva Shifts Trains from Groningen to Gelderland

Four Arriva trains, originally designated for rail traffic in Groningen and Friesland, are being deployed to various regions across the Netherlands. These trains will operate along the Arriva routes in Gelderland and Limburg.

New Routes and Regional Impact

These Arriva trains will now run between Zutphen and Oldenzaal, as well as along the Nijmegen-Venray-Roermond line, commonly referred to as the Maaslijn. According to Arriva, Northern Netherlands is experiencing a surplus of trains.

Overview of the Fleet

  • Arriva has 69 trainsets allocated for seven lines in Groningen and Friesland.
  • 51 trainsets, the Spurt type, have been operating since 2006.
  • 18 newer Wink-type trainsets have been operational since 2021.

Due to the need for additional trains, Arriva has begun to deploy four Spurt-type trainsets in other regions. The rolling stock is well-suited for diesel routes or cleaner fuel alternatives, which are also in use in Groningen.

Meeting Regional Demands

Strategic Train Allocation

Arriva has initiated service on new routes, requiring extra trains between Zutphen and Oldenzaal, as well as between Nijmegen and Roermond, with delays in electrification noted.

Notable Train Names

The newly deployed trains carry notable names such as the Nobel Prize-winning physicist Heike Kamerlingh Onnes and artist Jopie Huisman. These trains have adopted a dark blue livery to align with their new service area.

Continued Mobility in Northern Netherlands

Arriva assures passengers that the relocation of these trains will not disrupt services on the Northern Nevenlijnen, the regional railways in Groningen and Friesland. Adjustments to operations were made before these trains were moved.
