Series of Changes: FCI Dublin Staff Required to Work at High-Security Atwater Prison
Mandatory Job Assignments for FCI Dublin Employees
This week, a series of directives were issued to the remaining employees of FCI Dublin, requiring them to work at the high-security USP Atwater, located approximately 90 miles away. According to a memo obtained by KTVU, the warden emphasized that these daily assignments are mandatory. "This is neither a volunteer opportunity nor a Temporary Duty Assignment (TDY)," the memo stated, noting that not complying would be viewed as a refusal of work.
Staffing Crisis and Temporary Assignments
Bureau of Prisons spokesman Emery Nelson acknowledged that there is a nationwide staffing crisis, impacting facilities like USP Atwater. While some employees from correctional and health services are temporarily assisting at Atwater, they remain under assignment at Dublin, as reiterated by Nelson.
The Atwater facility houses around 1,200 incarcerated men and is located roughly two hours drive from Dublin. This shift in assignments comes after the closure of the women's prison in Dublin amid significant reform issues. Since then, seven former correctional officers have faced legal repercussions for serious offenses.
