Kyle Hayes' Dangerous Driving Conviction

Limerick hurling star Kyle Hayes was convicted of dangerous driving after a court heard he overtook a row of nine vehicles on a dual carriageway at 155mph in a 100k area. Hayes of Ballyashea, Kildimo, County Limerick, offered to plead guilty in Mallow District Court to a lesser charge of careless driving.

Court Proceedings and Conviction

Judge Colm Roberts stated the case merited a conviction for dangerous driving rather than careless driving, as suggested by the defense. The five-time All-Ireland winning hurler appeared personally in court dressed in a navy jacket, pink shirt, and beige trousers. Garda Deirdre Barrett described how she clocked him at an excessive speed and how he ran out of lane as he sped past the traffic in his white high-powered Audi A6.

Consequences of the Conviction

He was banned from driving for two years and fined E250 by Judge Colm Roberts, who warned that speed kills. The judge noted familiarity with the road near Mallow where the offense took place on July 14 and expressed concern for Hayes' safety. The conviction will be sent to Limerick Circuit Court, where it triggers previous convictions of violent disorder stemming from an attack outside a Limerick nightclub for which Hayes received a two-year suspended sentence last March. His lawyer indicated that Hayes plans to appeal the driving conviction.
