Samuel Etienne and the Launch of Z Event: A Major Charity Initiative
Samuel Etienne Joins Z Event’s Grand Launch
On Friday, the Z Event, the largest online charity event in France, commenced at 6 PM, following an impressive concert the night before at the Zenith in Montpellier. "I declare the Z Event 2024 open!" exclaimed streamer ZeratoR on his Twitch channel, the organizer and co-creator of this initiative with his right-hand man Alexandre Dachary, in front of over 110,000 viewers alongside participating streamers. Within twenty minutes of the launch, donations surpassed 50,000 euros.
A Thrilling 50-Hour Marathon
Over the next 50 hours, around thirty internet personalities will take turns playing video games, answering quizzes, and challenging each other to various tasks. Their goal is to raise funds for five charities combating precariousness, including Secours Populaire, Bureaux du cœur, and Solidarité Paysans, in collaboration with the Fondation de France. After a year-long hiatus, this edition sees streamers like Kameto, Ladysundae, and AVAMind, along with talk show host Samuel Etienne.
Concerns and Community Impact
They will be joined online by around a hundred others, reflecting the top 100 streams with the most viewing hours from the past year, as per the organizers. "The aim is ultimately to let everyone participate, much like a Telethon," explained Adrien Nougaret, aka ZeratoR, who hopes to open it up to all willing streamers as soon as next year. Nevertheless, numerous criticisms have arisen on social media regarding certain profiles selected among the 100, notably accused of making inappropriate comments. Streaming figure Natu’ali expressed concerns on platform X about not enforcing a background check on participants, stating that this endangers women and racialized individuals in the community. ZeratoR acknowledges the difficulty in judging and setting limits, advocating for a 'right to redemption' within the community.
Record-Breaking Fundraising Efforts
The Z Event usually attracts between 500,000 and one million viewers. Since its inaugural edition in 2016, previously called Project Avengers, this fundraising effort has amassed over 31 million euros, breaking its record in 2022 by raising more than 10 million euros for environmental organizations. According to ZeratoR, the funds raised have enabled associations like Sea Shepherd to acquire a new boat or finance operations for a hospital in the Central African Republic.
