Ajit Doval's Visit to Russia: A Diplomatic Mission

India's National Security Adviser (NSA), Ajit Doval, will be visiting Moscow for two days on September 10 and 11 to engage in discussions aimed at resolving the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. This visit highlights India’s growing role as a mediator in the conflict that has significantly affected global stability for more than two-and-a-half years.

PM Modi's Ongoing Peace Efforts

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been actively involved in peace efforts, recently visiting both Russia and Ukraine to advance diplomatic talks. During his visit to Russia in July, he stressed to President Putin that “this is not an era for war.” Similarly, in August, Modi traveled to Kyiv where he met with President Zelenskyy to reaffirm India's commitment to facilitating peace negotiations. Modi also discussed the situation over the phone with Putin on August 27, leading to the decision that Doval would visit Moscow for further discussions.

Global Recognition of India's Growing Diplomatic Role

President Putin has shown willingness towards a peaceful solution, mentioning Brazil, China, and India as possible mediators. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has also acknowledged India's position as a credible intermediary, reflecting India's increasing diplomatic influence on the global stage.

Casualty Concerns Amidst Ongoing Hostilities

Despite international initiatives, the situation on the ground remains dire, with approximately 500,000 casualties reported. U.S. officials suggest that Russia alone may have faced as many as 300,000 casualties. Negotiations previously attempted in Istanbul failed to bring significant results, with ongoing hostilities continuing to escalate and no immediate resolution visible.
