Military Talks to Strengthen India-Maldives Relations

Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan on Saturday held extensive talks with Maldives' Chief of Defence Force Major General Ibrahim Hilmy, focusing on b>reviving military ties that came under severe strain after President Mohamed Muizzu assumed office in November last. The talks between the two top military officials came a day after India and Maldives held the fifth round of defence dialogue which decided to expedite implementation of ongoing defence projects.

Officials noted that the discussions aimed at furthering b>bilateral defence cooperation, especially on measures to enhance regional security and increase bilateral training opportunities. It is understood that cooperation in maritime security dominated the discussions. The ties between India and Maldives came under severe strain since Muizzu, known for his pro-China leanings, took charge of the presidency.

Notably, the India-funded Greater Male Connectivity Project, which was initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former Maldivian President Solih in August 2022, plays a crucial role. This infrastructure initiative includes a 6.74 km bridge and causeway linking the capital Male with Villingli, Gulhifalhu, and Thilafushi islands.
