Cody Durden's Stunning Victory with Nasty Ninja Choke at UFC Vegas 97
Cody Durden Shocks Matt Schnell with a Nasty Ninja Choke
Cody Durden wasn’t even competing at UFC Vegas 97 this time last week but he made the most of his opportunity on four days’ notice after tapping out Matt Schnell with a nasty ninja choke in the second round. Following a fiery first round, Durden took advantage of a mistake from Schnell to set up his submission.
The Submission Technique
As soon as Durden saw the opening to grab the head, he wrapped his arms around to secure the rare choke and he fell to the ground to sustain his position. Despite attempts to escape, Schnell had no choice but to tap out due to the tremendous pressure from Durden. The fight ended just 29 seconds into the second round.
“Without risk there’s no reward,” said Durden following the win. “Four day notice. I backed it up. I love the UFC and I’m grateful to get in here tonight.”
Following the loss, Schnell left a symbolic gesture of retirement by laying down his gloves in the center of the canvas.
Looking Ahead
If this is the end for Schnell, he retires with a record of 16-9 and one no contest since 2012, spending nearly eight years in the UFC. On the other hand, Durden’s performance was impressive, especially after previously losing two fights. His skills shined through as he dominated the ring with confidence.
