Mosquito-Borne Illnesses: A Growing Concern

Anthony Fauci recently disclosed that he was hospitalized after catching the dreaded mosquito-borne West Nile virus, telling Stat News, "I really felt like I'd been hit by a truck." Well, mosquitoes suck. The serious implications of mosquito-borne illnesses like malaria and yellow fever have long plagued humanity. The recent emergence of cases of eastern equine encephalitis in Massachusetts is alarming.

Climate Change and Habitats

These mosquito-borne diseases are expanding their range, partly driven by climate change, yet they remain relatively rare in the United States. This wasn't always the case—yellow fever caused several significant epidemics in the U.S., dramatically altering history. However, scientific advances have led to better insights into transmission and effective vaccines.

Public Health Response

The United States hasn't experienced a major yellow fever outbreak since 1905. We can leverage this historical success when faced with other mosquito-borne illnesses: a widespread public health response focusing on mosquito eradication in populous areas and prioritizing new vaccine development is essential.

Individual Defenses

To protect ourselves, the best strategies include using nets and screens to prevent mosquitoes from entering homes, and properly covering up outdoors—stuff those hiking pants into socks! Effective insect repellents include DEET, Picaridin, and PMD. Personally, I prefer DEET for its proven efficacy.

Looking Ahead

I genuinely hope we see advancements in vaccines. It's easy to forget the arduous journey to past public health victories, but maintaining constant vigilance is critical.
