AFL Games: A Local Alternative in Perth

A Leederville oval could soon host AFL games by becoming a “local alternative” to Optus Stadium. The City of Vincent has secured $3.8 million in funding from the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries to replace the turf at Sullivan Logistics Stadium — formerly Leederville Oval — and upgrade its lighting to “broadcast standard.” Upgrades will begin in October and are expected to be completed by early 2025, in time for the AFLW and WAFL seasons.

Funding and Goals for Sullivan Logistics Stadium

The city has been advocating for funding to enhance the stadium since 2022, aiming to turn it into a “boutique AFL venue.” “Sullivan Logistics Stadium is the largest football venue in Vincent and one of the State’s leading grounds for WAFL and WAFLW,” Vincent mayor Alison Xamon said. “It is our long-term goal to transform the venue into a local alternative to Optus Stadium to host major AFLW fixtures and AFL Gather Round matches if WA’s pitch succeeds. We will continue to work with the Department, AFL, WAFL, East Perth, and Subiaco to ensure the upgrade works run smoothly over the next few months.”
