HENDERSON, Ky (WEHT) - A woman from Louisville is behind bars after police say she was attempting to get into random cars outside of an Evansville business.

According to an affidavit, Evansville Police officers were called to the 200 block of North Main Street Friday morning. Police were able to identify the woman in question as Ricki Smith, 28. One person told police that he was working when he saw Smith allegedly trying to open car doors that were in a parking lot nearby.

He said Smith found a vehicle that was unlocked and sat in the driver's seat. He claimed he told Smith to leave. He also claimed that Smith jumped into another woman's vehicle while she began to walk into the store. He said he tried to pull Smith out of the vehicle but couldn't due to Smith still holding on to the gear shifter.

That was when the woman reportedly ran over and grabbed Smith by the hair, pulling her out. The woman reportedly told police that she was taking her child to daycare and had to stop at the store. She claimed she left the vehicle unlocked and started walking across the street when she saw Smith getting into her vehicle.

The woman said she wanted to file charges because her child was still in the backseat. Smith claimed she was traveling from Louisville to Evansville when her car broke down and hitchhiked the rest of the way. When asked why she would steal the vehicle, Smith allegedly said Kanye West speaks to her telegraphically and told her to steal it.

Smith was taken to the Vanderburgh County Jail. While there, officers received more information that Smith had wrecked her vehicle into the tree line off of Highway 64, which is why she said she abandoned the vehicle. As of this writing, Smith's booking photo was not available.
