September Social Security Checks: Missing Payments Explained

Understanding the September Social Security Checks Situation

Millions will see their September Social Security checks missing due to a calendar quirk. This primarily affects those receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI), a program for disabled adults and low-income seniors. Typically, these recipients get their payments on the first of the month, but since September 1 fell on a Sunday this year, payments were processed on Friday, August 30. Consequently, beneficiaries will have to wait until October 1 for the next deposit.

Impact on SSI Recipients

About 7.5 million individuals receive SSI benefits, with a maximum monthly benefit of $943. In contrast, the average Social Security retirement benefit payment is $1,907. It's notable that other beneficiaries will receive their payments as scheduled in September.

  • September 11: Payments for those born between the 1st and 10th.
  • September 18: Payments for those born between the 11th and 20th.
  • September 25: Payments for those born between the 21st and 31st.

Changes in SSI Application Process

In related news, the Social Security Administration announced a simplification of the SSI application process, set to roll out in December. The new online application, called iClaim, aims to streamline the process by offering pre-populated answers and straightforward questions.
