Sabalenka Dominates to Reach US Open Semifinals
New York (dpa) - Defending finalist Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus is back on course for the final at the US Open. In a stunning display, the world number two won the quarterfinal against Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen from China in just 73 minutes, with a score of 6:1, 6:2.
Sabalenka will now face American player Emma Navarro, who triumphed over Spain's Paula Badosa in straight sets. “The drinks are on me and she supports me for the next match,” Sabalenka joked as she looked forward to the matchup with an American player. “It’s going to be a great fight, and I’m really excited for the game.” This marks her fourth consecutive semifinal appearance at the US Open.
The two-time Australian Open champion lost against American crowd favorite Coco Gauff in last year’s final. However, a rematch in the finals is off the table, as the defending champion has already been eliminated, losing to Navarro.
