Süddeutsche Zeitung Highlights Growing Costs for Wolf Management in Rheinland-Pfalz
Rising Costs of Wolf Management
Süddeutsche Zeitung sheds light on the increasing financial burden of wolf management in Rheinland-Pfalz. The expenditures aimed at protective measures for livestock against wolves have surged appreciably over the last few years. In 2019 alone, close to 155,000 euros were allocated. The expenses escalated dramatically, with 2020 seeing about 293,500 euros and climbing to nearly 729,000 euros in 2021. For 2022 and 2023, the funds disbursed were approximately 668,500 euros and around 688,000 euros, respectively.
Protection Measures for Livestock
- Funding is designated for wolf-deterrent herd protection measures, including electric fences and the maintenance costs for herding dogs.
- Prevention areas are established where a permanent wolf presence is anticipated, such as in Westerwald or Eifel.
Additionally, the Coordination Center Lynx and Wolf (Kluwo) has been operational since 2021, managing inquiries and protective measures related to both species. Expenditures for Kluwo without herd protection funding have also surged from about 240,000 euros in 2021 to nearly 597,000 euros in 2023. As the wolf population increases, costs are expected to rise even further.
Concerns from Opposition
Despite the environmental ministry's assurances, local opposition, particularly from the CDU faction, condemns the management strategy as ineffective, labeling it as mere 'pseudo-population management.' The CDU's spokesperson criticized the lack of tangible outcomes from the resource expenditure.
