Heavy Thunderstorm Warning Causes Disruption
The situation escalated in Cherokee County on Friday evening as a heavy thunderstorm warning was issued for the region. Wind and rain temporarily knocked out power to thousands as a storm system swept through parts of metro Atlanta.
Destruction in Canton
The storms were responsible for downed trees in areas like Canton, with one incident resulting in a tree crashing through a home on Shoal Creek Drive. According to property managers, this occurred around 4:30 p.m., when heavy rain and high winds sent the tree crashing through the roof, caving in the ceiling. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries, and affected residents were relocated temporarily.
Ongoing Emergency Response
Nearby, chainsaws buzzed as workers cut up another fallen tree. The Cherokee County Fire Department reported widespread damage from storms, with fallen trees and torn-down powerlines leading to road closures and multiple accidents.
Georgia Emergency Management indicated that as many as 2,000 customers experienced power outages due to the storms. However, by 9:30 p.m., Georgia Power reported only a handful of outages remaining.
