Cyclone Yagi Approaching Hong Kong: What to Expect

Cyclone Yagi Weather Update

Cyclone Yagi is developing off the coast of the Philippines and is likely to edge closer to Hong Kong this week. The Hong Kong Observatory stated that an area of low pressure will strengthen and move towards Luzon in the coming days before entering the northern part of the South China Sea.

The forecaster anticipates Yagi to drift toward Southern China later this week. Yagi, meaning goat in Japanese, was previously used to name a typhoon in 2018.

Weather Warnings Issued

  • Weather will become increasingly unsettled towards the end of the week.
  • Yagi is expected to transform from a tropical depression into a tropical storm on Monday.
  • It will further strengthen into a severe tropical storm on Tuesday, approaching within 800km of Hong Kong.
  • Forecasts indicate a potential typhoon by Thursday, with maximum wind speeds reaching 120km/h.
  • By Friday, it could close in within 300km, with winds of up to 145km/h.

Potential Impact on Hong Kong

  1. Increased chances of tropical rains from Thursday to the following week.
  2. Temperatures will remain high, averaging around 32 degrees Celsius (89.6 Fahrenheit).

The Observatory cautioned that several more typhoons may occur within 500km of Hong Kong this year, despite a reduced number observed earlier in the season.
