Atletiek Paralympische Spelen: Ylonne Post Shines Ahead of Her Paralympic Debut

ARNHEM - In 2018, Ylonne Post's life changed dramatically after an accident left her in a wheelchair. Now, six years later, the 22-year-old is beaming with joy as she holds a basketball in her hands. "This sport has given me so much," she says. Moments before the farewell match of the Dutch women's wheelchair basketball team in Bemmel, the De Kooi sports center fills with hundreds eager to see the gold medal favorite one last time before the journey to Paris.

Is she a favorite? Absolutely. The Netherlands is the reigning European, world, and Olympic champion. "Yes, that brings a bit of tension," Post admits. "But I have a lot of confidence in this team. They have proven themselves time and time again."

Falling in Love with the Sport

Post fell in love with wheelchair basketball in 2019 when she watched the women’s team clinch the European title in Rotterdam. "It was incredible. I knew I wanted this for myself," she recalls. During her rehabilitation, she got involved with wheelchair basketball and has since been dedicated to the sport. Since 2021, following the Dutch team's golden Paralympic adventure, she has been part of the national squad and has already claimed the European title and been crowned world champion in Dubai.

Unbelievable Journey

"I still pinch myself sometimes. I never thought I would get this far in such a short time. And now I’m heading to my very first Games. Unbelievable!" laughs Post. At only 22, she is the youngest in the team, but team captain Carina de Rooij, aged 44, praises her. "She is young, strong, and very motivated. I believe she can grow into an exceptional player."

The Ultimate Dream

Come Friday at 10:30 AM, the dream will begin as the Netherlands plays against Japan, marking Post’s official entry into the Paralympics. "I find it very exciting. But... mostly fun. I get a lot of confidence from the team and the staff. All the veterans are taking good care of me, providing tips and guiding me along the way," she smiles.

And what is the ultimate dream? With a sparkle in her eyes, Post laughs and says, "Gold. That is the dream." The Paralympic wheelchair basketball final is on Sunday, September 8, where we'll see if that dream becomes reality.
