Alexander Zverev Talks About Fast Courts and Roger Federer
Battered just a week ago by Jannik Sinner in a nail-biting semifinals at the Cincinnati Masters 1000, Alexander Zverev appreciated the swift playing conditions in Ohio. During an interview with Tennis Channel, the German player revealed a well-known fact about Roger Federer during his active years on the circuit.
“I play with an old-school racket,” explains the Hamburg native. “I have a fairly heavy tennis racket. Some youngsters don't do that, so they hit much faster than me. But when the ball comes with speed, I believe if it’s heavier, it helps you. This could be part of why I prefer faster courts.”
He adds: “I am from the generation ten years ago, or five or six years ago, when we had very fast hard courts, especially when Roger Federer was still around. And of course, tournaments liked him to go far in the draw, so they built very, very fast courts. So I am a bit more accustomed to that than some members of the younger generation, but there are still a few adjustments to make.”
