Bhutan's Growing Passion for Baseball Takes Center Stage
Bhutan’s Baseball Evolution
Baseball wasn’t played in Bhutan until 2010, when Matthew DeSantis and Karma Dorji united to form the Bhutan Baseball and Softball Association (BBSA). Since then, participation has skyrocketed to more than 6,000 children playing.
The Night of Celebration
During the special Bhutan Night, 12 players attended a Hudson Valley Renegades game, celebrating their culture by donning traditional ghos and partaking in ceremonial first pitches.
A Memorable Experience
- The players toured the beautiful Hudson Valley.
- They attended a clinic led by Renegades coaches.
- A memorable check presentation of $62,885 was made to support their baseball aspirations.
The Future of Bhutan Baseball
Following their experience, the ballplayers received a VIP tour of Yankee Stadium and even participated in batting practice. DeSantis dreams of seeing a Bhutanese player reach the professional ranks in baseball.
