Crete Faces Migration Surge as 76 Migrants Land on Gavdos Island
Crete Struggles with Migration Influx
On Tuesday morning, a notable event unfolded on Gavdos, a small island south of Crete, as 76 irregular migrants from Syria, Egypt, Sudan, and Bangladesh reached its shores. These migrants were transported in three separate vessels. Local fishermen played a crucial role in assisting the migrants to safety.
Conditions and Further Actions
According to Gavdos Mayor Lilian Stefanaki, the group included six children and four women, all appearing in good health. They will be transferred via ferry to Sfakia in Crete for further processing before being sent to Athens, where they will stay in a migrant reception center.
Two boats arrived at Karave port, while the third boat reached Trypiti with assistance from a nearby fishing vessel. Stewart emphasized that this is not the first occurrence this tourist season, reflecting ongoing migration efforts to reach Crete. She noted, “This will continue happening as long as nothing is done in their countries.”
