20 Minutes Explores the Migros France Merger with Cooperative U
20 Minutes Highlights the Strategic Merger
After the announcement of the Schiever group's alignment with Cooperative U in spring 2024, Migros France is set to join the cooperative in January 2025. The agreement ensures Migros France's affiliation with Cooperative U, effective January 1, 2025. A wholly-owned subsidiary of Migros Geneva, Migros France operates three stores in the Ain and Haute-Savoie regions: Thoiry (6100 m²), Etrembières (5600 m²), and Neydens (1700 m²).
Strengthening Market Presence
This merger with Cooperative U, the fourth-largest grocery distribution group in France, will enable Migros France to leverage the strength of a national brand while maintaining its identity and independence. Dominique Schelcher, CEO of Cooperative U, expressed, “The arrival of Migros France perfectly aligns with our development strategy ‘Cap 15’ aimed at reaching 15% market share by 2030. This merger will bolster our presence in a dynamic border region while enriching our network.”
- After 30 years of partnership with Cora, Migros France stores will adopt the Hyper U and Super U brands by early 2025.
- Cooperative U benefits from the geographical complementarity of these stores located in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
Beyond shared values of proximity, commitment, and responsibility, this merger will provide Migros France access to the logistical, technical, and IT tools of Cooperative U, while ensuring management autonomy. The transition to the U brand will follow the remodeling of the retail outlets, accompanied by an evolution of the offer, including an assortment of wines and spirits.
“Our membership in Cooperative U is a major strategic decision that allows us to remain masters of our choices while ensuring our sustainability,” said Pascal Laidet, DG of Migros France. “We will retain our Migros DNA, with our human values and local roots, while benefiting from the strength of a recognized national brand.”
