Pottwal Zürich: A Provocative Art Installation

On Monday morning, multiple news scouts uncovered a stranded pottwal in Zürich, lying along the promenade at Utoquai. However, doubts arise regarding its authenticity as a real whale. Instead, it appears to be part of an art project, with a deliberate stinky artificial decomposition odor to heighten its lifelike appearance.

Art for Awareness

Previous years have seen similar installations in other European cities, attributed to the activist artist group Captain Boomer. In Zürich, the same activists, proudly adorned in gear featuring their logo, aim to spotlight pressing environmental issues.

A Collaborative Effort

This initiative was brought to life through collaboration with the marine conservation organization KYMA sea conservation & research and the Zürich Theater Spektakel, as detailed in a media release on Monday morning. The whale is set to remain at Utoquai until Wednesday evening. Interestingly, this may well be the same whale replica spotted last Friday in Basel and later in Kloten, which underwent customs scrutiny—including the use of a mobile X-ray facility.
