Outcome of the Genderstern Zürich Vote

The city of Zürich decisively repudiated the Tschüss Genderstern Initiative as 57.3% of voters cast their ballots against it. The initiative, brought forth by SVP politician Susanne Brunner, aimed to encourage clear, understandable language and eliminate special characters such as in Bürger*innen. The anticipation surrounding the vote was palpable, with prior polls indicating skepticism towards gendered language amongst a substantial portion of the population in Zürich.

Voter Division in Zürich

In the voting process, affluent and conservative districts (Zürich 7+8, 10, and 11) expressed support for the initiative, while traditionally liberal areas overwhelmingly rejected it. Susanne Brunner lamented the outcome, acknowledging the disappointment for the 43% of voters advocating for an end to gendered language in official discourse.
