Jerry West Tribute: Clippers Celebrate NBA Icon's Legacy
Jerry West Tribute at Clippers Opener
INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Clippers honored the late Jerry West with a video tribute midway through the first quarter of their opener against the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday night.
Commemorations at Intuit Dome
The Basketball Hall of Famer served as a consultant for the franchise from 2017 until his passing in June at age 86. The Clippers are also honoring West at Intuit Dome, their new arena, with a memorial seat behind the basket and a court decal featuring his initials near midcourt.
Lakers' Homage to West
The Lakers also honored Jerry West during their opener against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday night with a halftime video, and provided fans with era-accurate replicas of his jersey. West’s widow, Karen, along with two of his sons, Ryan and Jonnie, witnessed both teams’ tributes.
Lakers' Tribute
The Lakers, having been the team where West played his entire 14-year NBA career, are wearing a band on the left shoulder of their uniforms emblazoned with No. 44 in gold at the center. This recognition is particularly poignant as West became the first three-time inductee into the Hall of Fame this month, acknowledging his contributions as a front office figure for the Clippers, Lakers, Golden State Warriors, and Memphis Grizzlies.
