Jets vs Bills: A Surprising Shade from Coach DeMeco Ryans
Jets vs Bills: A Surprising Shade from Coach DeMeco Ryans
There’s no denying that Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen played a terrible game last week in Houston. Allen completed an eye-opening nine passes on 30 attempts against the Texans’ defense. The entire afternoon, Allen wasn’t able to connect with his receivers and found little protection in his offensive line. To say he’s ready to move beyond that performance would be an understatement.
Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans has also moved on from Week 5, and he was caught in a surprising moment that appears to indirectly dismiss the overall merits of Allen as among the NFL’s best quarterbacks. Per Robert M. Alexander, Ryans stated of Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love that “He will be the best quarterback we’ve seen this year.”
Oh really, now? Yes, Allen didn’t have a great game, rather one memorable for what it lacked instead of what it did to the Texans. Does that mean Love is now a better quarterback than Allen based off of one game? Apparently it does to Ryans.
Even if he’s just using it as anti-bulletin-board fodder, it’s a strange statement to make. It would seem just as odd for Ryans to state that Love is nowhere near as talented as Allen, especially before their Week 7 matchup. So why say anything at all on the subject?
Let’s consider the current stats for Allen and Love, which includes an extra game for Love: So in one more game, Love has thrown for 186 more yards, four more TDs (the number he just threw yesterday, in Week 6), while completing less than 60% of his passes.
If we want to consider QB win-loss records in the regular season, Jordan Love is 11-11. Josh Allen has a 66-32 record in the regular season. Sure, DeMeco... you do you. One can only hope that Josh Allen is given another opportunity to show Ryans everything he’s capable of doing to an NFL defense.
