David Montgomery Signs $18.25 Million Deal

The Detroit Lions are keeping one of their top offensive playmakers for the long haul. Running back David Montgomery has agreed to terms on a two-year contract extension worth $18.25 million with $10.5 million guaranteed, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Saturday, per sources.

Montgomery’s new deal extends his time with the Lions through the 2027 season. Selected No. 73 overall in the 2019 NFL Draft, Montgomery has been a sturdy running back since joining the league, racking up 1,197 carries for 4,895 yards and 43 touchdowns over his six-year career.

Montgomery's Impact on the Lions

Montgomery spent his first four seasons with the Chicago Bears and had a career-best 1,070 rushing yards in 2020. Joining the Lions in 2023 as an unrestricted free agent, Montgomery made an immediate impact with 219 carries for 1,015 yards and 13 touchdowns, plus 16 receptions for 117 yards in 14 games.

This production was significant alongside the duo of 2023 first-round draft pick Jahmyr Gibbs, who recorded 182 carries for 945 yards and 11 total touchdowns. Their collaboration propelled Detroit to the NFC Championship Game for the first time since 1991.

As they begin the 2024 season, both Montgomery and Gibbs have continued their strong start, with Montgomery tallying 363 yards and four touchdowns on 72 touches through four games. This new contract ensures the two will lead the backfield together for years ahead.

Coming off the bye week, Montgomery and the Lions are set to face the Dallas Cowboys at 4:25 p.m. ET on Sunday. Visit for more details.
