Seahawks Roster Moves Before 49ers Game

The Seahawks signed cornerback Artie Burns off their practice squad and activated nose tackle Cameron Young from the physically unable to perform list ahead of Thursday night’s game against the 49ers.

To make room on the roster, outside linebacker Uchenna Nwosu was placed on injured reserve and guard McClendon Curtis was waived.

Additionally, the Seahawks elevated outside linebacker Jamie Sheriff and safety Ty Okada from the practice squad for Thursday’s game.

Burns, a ninth-year veteran and former first-round pick of the Steelers, is in his third season with the Seahawks, having appeared in 17 games, including 14 games with one start last season. With starting cornerback Riq Woolen out with an ankle injury, Burns gives the Seahawks added depth at that position and potentially could play a big role if the Seahawks want to use him at nickel corner.

For most of the season, Devon Witherspoon has played nickel corner when the Seahawks have three cornerbacks on the field, then moved outside in base defense. The Seahawks could stick with that plan and replace Woolen with rookie Nehemiah Pritchett, who took over at right cornerback late in last week’s game, or they could keep Witherspoon outside and have Burns handle nickel duties.

Young, a fourth-round pick in last year’s draft, appeared in 16 games last season with one start, recording 18 tackles, one tackle for loss, one pass defensed, and one quarterback hit.

Nwosu is going on injured reserve because of a thigh injury suffered in last weekend’s game. That was his first game back after missing the previous four games due to a knee injury, and the final 11 games of last season with a pectoral injury, a tough run of injury luck for a player who, prior to the pectoral injury, missed just three games in his first five-plus seasons.
