Ugchelen Emergency Shelter: Latest Updates on Asylum Seekers
Ugchelen Emergency Shelter Opening Delayed
UGCHELEN - The emergency shelter in Ugchelen for asylum seekers from Ter Apel is set to potentially open this Saturday. The location, which was supposed to temporarily accommodate about a hundred asylum seekers, sustained significant damage due to an explosion earlier this week. This was confirmed by the COA on Thursday.
Explosion Details and Local Response
In the night from Tuesday to Wednesday, an explosive was triggered at the emergency shelter located in the former primary school, De Bouwhof. The reason behind the explosion and the identity of the responsible party remain unclear. It is known that a segment of the Ugchelen residents has been opposing plans for a nighttime shelter for a maximum of one hundred persons, which was selected to alleviate the overcrowded reception center in Ter Apel.
Current Status
On Wednesday, the municipality of Apeldoorn indicated that the shelter would be operational on Friday. However, the following day, it became apparent that this would not be feasible. COA spokesperson Jan Scholten stated that excessive glass, soot, and smoke damage in the building rendered it unsuitable for immediate use.
