Johan Neeskens: A Life in Football

Utrecht / Zeist - Former footballer and coach Johan Neeskens passed away yesterday at the age of 73. As reported by the KNVB, Neeskens recently suffered from health issues while in Algeria serving the football federation. Despite medical assistance, he could not be saved.

Throughout his career, Neeskens played for prominent clubs including Ajax, Barcelona, and various teams in the United States. He concluded his playing career in Switzerland, where he lived most of the year, while his residency was in Utrecht, Netherlands. Neeskens' coaching journeys took him across the globe to countries such as Switzerland, Australia, Spain, Turkey, and South Africa.

Remarkable Contributions to Dutch Football

He represented the Nederlands Elftal in 49 international matches, famously scoring a powerful penalty in the 1974 World Cup final and appearing again in the final against Argentina four years later.

In his later years, Neeskens contributed to the KNVB as part of the WorldCoaches program, traveling internationally to train coaches in low- and middle-income countries. This commitment is what brought him to Algeria recently.

Although he rarely gave interviews, he participated in a reunion for the national team from the 1974 World Cup earlier this year, where he shared his views on football. He stated, “The collective is what matters. You need each other on the field. You can only become champions as a team; there is only one star, and that is the team.”
