Johan Neeskens: A Dutch Football Icon Remembered
Johan Neeskens: A Revered Legacy in Football
Johan Neeskens, the celebrated footballer and coach, has sadly died at the age of 73, as confirmed by the KNVB. Neeskens had recently been in Algeria as part of the KNVB WorldCoaches program before experiencing health issues. Unfortunately, medical assistance could not save him.
He is celebrated as an icon of Dutch football, having won multiple accolades including two Eredivisie titles with Ajax, three European Cup I championships, and a Club World Cup title. Neeskens also experienced the bittersweet moments of playing in two World Cup finals in 1974 and 1978, where the 'Oranje' fell short against West Germany and Argentina.
Notably, Neeskens scored 17 goals in 49 international matches, leaving his mark with powerful penalties and exceptional stamina. His move to FC Barcelona in 1974 saw him become known as Johan Segundo, playing alongside the legendary Johan Cruyff. After ventures in the USA and eventually settling in Switzerland, Neeskens transitioned to coaching.
As Frank Rijkaard's assistant, he thrived in coaching for both FC Barcelona and the Dutch national team, achieving great success. His managerial career included a tenure at NEC and a finale with Mamelodi Sundowns FC in South Africa in 2012.
