René van Kooten Takes the Lead in Rob De Nijs’ Musical Journey

ZIPTERMEER - The rumors have circulated, but it’s now confirmed: René van Kooten will portray the lead role in the musical Malle Babbe, which explores the life of beloved singer Rob De Nijs. “It’s truly special to be able to do this,” Van Kooten shares. The musical, co-developed by producer Joop van den Ende and Rob De Nijs alongside his wife Jet, indicates a personal connection. Van Kooten recalls, “I visited Rob and Jet at their home a few weeks ago, and it was remarkable to see and talk to Rob up close. He’s thrilled that I’m taking on the role, and they are proud of the support from everyone.”

Exploring Rob’s Memories Through the Impact of Parkinson’s

Parkinson's disease, affecting De Nijs, plays a significant role in the musical. “This moment enables us to dive into Rob’s brain and memories,” Van Kooten explains. “The intertwining of past, present, dreams, and reality creates a rich tapestry, allowing characters like Malle Babbe and others to come alive within his memory’s circus.”

Transitioning from Shrek to Malle Babbe

To take on the role in Malle Babbe, Van Kooten is stepping away from his role in Shrek, where he also holds the lead. The Shrek producers were understanding, recognizing the significance of this project. “Rob De Nijs is revered and beloved, and the producers see this production as transcendent.”

The musical Malle Babbe will premiere in Amsterdam in February 2025, reaching theaters across the nation, including Alphen aan den Rijn, Zoetermeer, and Rijswijk.
