Ocean Park: Pandas An An and Ke Ke Adjusting to Their New Home
Adjustment of Pandas at Ocean Park
The personalities of the pandas at Ocean Park are influencing how quickly they adapt to their new surroundings. An An, known for being adventurous, is currently quarantining in a den, while his counterpart Ke Ke, characterized as more reserved, remains in a training cage. Howard Chuk Hau-chung, head of zoological operations, highlighted that these adaptations cater to their distinct personalities.
Nature of Pandas’ Adaptation
After arriving from Sichuan Province, the adult bears are spending at least 30 days in quarantine followed by another 30 days of adaptation in their renovated home. Mandy Tang, assistant curator, noted adjustments to their bamboo ratio, increasing the proportion grown in Guangzhou for better acclimatization.
- Ke Ke is sensitive to new environments and strangers.
- An An is open and eager to explore.
- Both pandas are under close monitoring for diet and behavior.
Interacting with the Public
The two giant pandas, each five years old, will not meet the public until Christmas at the earliest. The government has begun a naming competition, encouraging public participation for this festive occasion.
