Time Off: The Essential Need for Farmers to Recharge
Importance of Taking Time Off
Brian and Liz Reid from Lothian Glamping recently presented a prize voucher to Pauline Macmillan, head of fundraising at RSABI, alongside RSABI case officer Jan Welsh. Launched at the Fife Show and promoted throughout key agricultural events this summer, RSABI initiated this program to encourage those in agriculture to prioritize time away from their demanding tasks.
Survey Insights on Farmers' Time Off
Over 280 participants completed the survey conducted in conjunction with a competition for a four-night stay at Lothian Glamping. Results indicate significant challenges for farmers in taking essential breaks. Notably, 43% of respondents reported taking only two to five nights away from the farm in a year.
Barriers to Taking Breaks
- 41% of respondents indicated worrying about the farm as a major barrier.
- Only 47% felt confident that someone else could manage the farm in their absence.
Positive Attitudinal Shift
Despite the barriers, a remarkable 93% of participants acknowledged that taking breaks could enhance their wellbeing and productivity. Encouragingly, 37% managed to take a break for seven nights or more, indicating a positive shift towards recognizing the need for time off.
Conclusion
The pressures faced by those in agriculture highlight the essential need for taking time off to safeguard their mental and physical health, according to RSABI.
