On Saturday afternoon, around 5650 Belgian and international youths gathered at Heysel in Brussels for the Hope Happening, organized as part of Le Pape François's visit to Belgium. Initially unplanned, Le Pape François arrived on Saturday evening to engage with the youth. Aimed at young people aged 12-30, the festival was coordinated by approximately 40 Christian youth organizations across Flanders, Wallonia, and Brussels, with backing from the Belgian episcopal conference.

A Day of Celebration and Faith

The event commenced with three pilgrimages ending at Heysel, drawing in 3335 young participants. The festival featured stands, workshops, and various activities revolving around faith and spirituality, complemented by music performances, including a concert by the Belgian band Portland. Young attendees will camp overnight within the Heysel pavilion.

Climax at the Roi Baudouin Stadium

The highlight will be the mass celebrated by Le Pape François on Sunday at the Roi Baudouin Stadium, marking a significant moment for the participants. With attendance from youth of 38 different nationalities, the event is supported by 400 volunteers. 'We are extremely pleased with the massive participation of the youth. This interest reflects their quest for meaning. Religion plays an important role in this regard,' expressed Sofi Van Ussel of Hope Happening.
