Relocating to Italy: A Dream Turned Challenge

Regina and John Zdravich, a couple from Northwest Indiana, envisioned a fulfilling retirement in Italy. After more than 20 years of visiting, they decided to make the leap in 2018. However, upon their arrival, they encountered extensive bureaucracy when applying for their elective residence visa, which turned out to be a lengthy ordeal.

A Forced Retreat to the US

After several months of difficult processes and the realization of the complications tied to their retirement income documentation, they made the tough decision to withdraw their applications, feeling homeless during winter in Indiana.

Finding a New path in Spain

Upon returning to Italy, they considered another option when they learned about retiring to Spain. Taking a gamble, they signed a lease and ultimately secured Non-Lucrative visas for their new life in Spain.

Embracing Spanish Life

Settling in the beach town of Oliva, the Zdravichs adapted to their new surroundings. Learning Spanish added a layer of challenge, yet they discovered a vibrant lifestyle, delicious cuisine, and affordability that contrasted sharply with their previous life in the US.

Home Ownership in Spain

In November 2018, they purchased a charming home in Catalonia, marking a fresh start filled with opportunities. Although language obstacles remained, the couple was determined to integrate and enjoy their new surroundings.

With long-term residency cards obtained, Regina and John appreciated the excellent quality of life, highlighted by affordable dining and a robust public healthcare system. They reflected on their earlier struggles in pursuit of life in Italy, realizing that their journey had led them to a place they love.
