Scarborough River Esk Project: A Bold Step Towards Community Engagement

Over the next five years, the Scarborough River Esk Connect (REConnect) initiative, backed by National Lottery players, aims to enhance local engagement with the environment. Schools, community organizations, and volunteers will engage in diverse conservation activities, including wildlife surveys and river monitoring.

Project Goals and Community Involvement

REConnect seeks to inspire and empower local communities to become stewards of their natural surroundings. The project area stretches across more than a third of the North York Moors National Park, featuring essential habitats for wildlife, including water voles and kingfishers. Participants can contribute through activities like litter picking and wildlife monitoring.

Briony Fox, Director of Conservation and Climate Change at the North York Moors National Park Authority, remarked, “Public concern about pollution and the health of our rivers is also higher than ever before. We aim to inspire people to take real, positive action in their local area.”

Hellen Hornby, Project Development Manager at Groundwork, shared that the funding would create nine ‘green’ jobs, emphasizing the project’s dedication to benefiting the local Scarborough community.
