Bosbranden Portugal: An Update on Current Wildfires and Firefighting Efforts
Bosbranden Portugal Intensify
In northern and central Portugal, at least fifteen wildfires are currently raging. The worst-hit area is Aveiro, where several villages have been evacuated. Multiple roads are closed, including sections of the highway between the capital Lisbon and Porto.
Currently, a heightened state of alert is in effect until at least tomorrow evening due to elevated temperatures and fierce winds. The most significant fire is near Oliveira de Azeméis, just south of Porto. In the town of Albergaria-a-Velha, located 30 kilometers south, several houses have burned down.
Firefighting Efforts and EU Assistance
Portuguese authorities have deployed approximately 1,500 firefighters to combat the wildfires. Unfortunately, some firefighters have sustained injuries, and a tragic loss occurred when a firefighter passed away during a break. In response to the escalating fire situation, Portugal has requested additional firefighting aircraft from the European Union. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, announced today the dispatch of eight firefighting planes from countries such as France, Italy, and Spain.
