Pennsylvania Welcomes Ready-to-Drink Cocktails in Grocery Stores and Gas Stations
Pennsylvania Expands Alcohol Sales
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Starting today, businesses in Pennsylvania that sell alcohol will be able to sell canned cocktails like High Noon and Surfside, which were previously only available at state-run liquor stores. Earlier this year, Governor Josh Shapiro signed a bill into law that expanded where 'ready-to-drink' cocktails could be sold.
Changes in Legislation
Under old state laws, cocktails containing spirits like vodka, gin, and tequila were restricted to state-run Fine Wine and Good Spirits stores. Hard seltzers such as White Claw and Truly could be sold since they contain alcohol made from fermented sugar, not a true spirit. Late last month, businesses like restaurants, hotels, grocery stores, and convenience stores began applying for permits to sell canned cocktails.
Details on Sales
With the new law effective today, stores that have received a permit can sell cocktails with an alcohol by volume ranging from 0.5% to 12.5% in containers up to 16 oz. maximum sales per transaction are limited to 192 ounces, equivalent to a 12-pack of 16 oz. cans.
Happy Hour Changes
Furthermore, Pennsylvania happy hour laws expanded recently, increasing the time bars and restaurants can offer happy hours from 14 to 24 hours per week. The new legislation also permits establishments with a liquor license to offer food and drink combinations, including up to two drinks in ticket prices for self-sponsored events.
