Fall Into Grain Bin - A Narrow Escape

A 71-year-old man faced a perilous situation after experiencing a fall into a grain bin near Disko. The dedicated firefighters from the Henry Township Volunteer Fire Department promptly responded to the emergency, arriving on site around 10:50 a.m. The man clung to a board, thrown to him by concerned family members, preventing him from sinking deeper into the grain. In order to free him, firefighters had to remove between 10,000 and 12,000 bushels of grain. By 11:37 a.m., the man was successfully extricated, remarkably walking away with minimal injuries.

Statistics on Grain Entrapment

Rochester Assistant Fire Chief Jamie Gagnon emphasized the dangers associated with grain bin entrapments. Such situations pose a high risk due to the pressure from large quantities of grain, which can cause severe injuries or worse.

Grain entrapment occurs when an individual becomes submerged in grain, making it nearly impossible to escape without immediate help. These incidents are not limited to grain bins but can happen around larger quantities of grain stored elsewhere. Often, unstable grain could suddenly collapse, burying anyone who falls into it. Unfortunately, grain engulfment incidents have a notably high fatality rate.
