Perth Airport's Main Runway Damage

Perth Airport’s main runway is back in action after a Qantas plane tore up part of the pavement as it was taking off on Sunday. The main runway was only partly operational on Sunday afternoon after Qantas flight QF71 damaged the strip during its 12pm takeoff. A video captured the plane accelerating from a stationary position, with significant parts of the runway pavement being ripped up.

Rapid Repairs and Reopening

  • Only some departing services used the main runway due to damage.
  • One freight plane was forced to make a diversion.
  • After urgent maintenance overnight, the runway reopened on Monday morning.

“Following a short full closure, the Main Runway was reopened to operate some departing services while urgent pavement maintenance works were undertaken,” a Perth Airport spokesperson confirmed. “The maintenance works were completed at approximately 0100 on Monday 16 September.” The Cross Runway remained fully operational throughout the situation. “Only one freight service made a diversion during the time with all other services continuing to operate safely.”
