Formule 1 Vandaag: Major Changes for Hamilton
Lewis Hamilton from Mercedes is set to start the F1 Baku from the pit lane following significant power unit changes. The seven-time world champion has received new components including a combustion engine, turbo, MGU-H, and MGU-K, totaling his fifth of the season while the FIA regulations allow only four.
Typically, such modifications would attract a grid penalty; however, due to Mercedes executing these changes under parc fermé rules without FIA approval, Hamilton must begin from the pit lane. His qualifying position was seventh for the Grand Prix van Azerbeidzjan.
Impacts on the Grid
This situation is advantageous for Lando Norris, who was eliminated in Q1 after having to slow down due to a yellow flag caused by a slow Esteban Ocon. Norris originally qualified in 17th but moved up to 16th after Pierre Gasly’s disqualification, and with Hamilton’s penalty, he will start in 15th place.
Hamilton will share the start line with Ocon, whose Alpine team also made similar changes to the car's motor parts without FIA permission. Ocon ended Q1 in last position after hitting the wall, which created the yellow flag situation impacting Norris.
