Radio Rijnmond Uncovers Major Pollution Sources in Rotterdam Harbor

Leading Polluters Identified:

According to an investigation by Radio Rijnmond, the Rotterdam port has been home to some of the most significant industrial emissions in the country. The study highlights the major contributors to air pollution, identifying the following five companies:

  1. Shell Pernis: The largest emitter, releasing high amounts of NMVOS, nitrogen oxides, and particulates.
  2. Esso Refinery Rotterdam: Second in emissions, primarily due to sulfur oxides.
  3. BP Refinery Rotterdam: Processes 400,000 barrels of oil daily, contributing significantly to air pollutants.
  4. Uniper Coal Plant on Maasvlakte: Notable for CO2 emissions, subjecting it to government regulations.
  5. Onyx Coal Plant: Emits CO2 and sulfur oxides, with plans to transition away from coal by 2030.

Environmental agency DCMR notes significant reductions in emissions since the 1970s, yet challenges remain as CO2 levels increase with industrial growth.
