Memorial Van Damme: Kevin Borlee Reflects on his Last 400m Race
Memorial Van Damme: Kevin Borlee's Final Race
After completing the last 400m individual of his career at the Memorial Van Damme on Friday night, Kevin Borlee spoke with our colleague David Bertrand from RTBF. The 36-year-old Brussels native shared that he felt 'I'm out of gas' after a grueling season focused on the Olympics.
A Bittersweet Farewell
Competing on the track at the Roi Baudouin Stadium, Borlee finished in a distant last place with a time of 47.18, behind winner Daniel Segers at 45.38. 'It wasn’t an easy race,' Borlee commented. 'I was somewhat slow to savor the public's presence. I believe I have much more in my legs, but... I'm out of gas.'
Honoring a Legacy
Kevin’s journey is not entirely over; he will be honored on Saturday along with his brother Jonathan, participating in the 4x400m with his club. 'I try to warm up as usual, but I feel a bit drained from the season and the years gone by. I try my best, but I can’t really bring the intensity anymore. I have given so much this season to qualify for the Olympics, and now I’m feeling the toll.'
Despite his fatigue, Borlee notes a bright side: 'The Paris Olympics definitely shone a spotlight on athletics. Interest waned somewhat after COVID-19, especially in athletics. Here it is returning alongside the excitement from Paris, which is positive. We must maintain this momentum to make athletics a leading sport again.'
The second night of the Memorial Van Damme will be aired live on Tipik and Auvio starting at 19:25. For more about Kevin Borlee’s final moments on this stage, visit the source for more details.
