Warrnambool Soccer: Excitement Builds for Grand Final Showdown

Warrnambool Soccer Gears Up for the Grand Final

HENRY Simmons has noticed the appetite for soccer increase in his short time in Australia. The Englishman, who was raised in West London, joined Warrnambool Wolves partway through the 2023 South West Victoria Football Association season.

The Wolves, who finished runner-up 12 months ago, will face Portland Panthers in the men’s division one final at Hamilton's Pedrina Park on Sunday, September 15. Simmons, who took on the coaching role in 2024, stated that Wolves had fielded a new-look side this season despite local lads moving away or taking a year abroad. However, the interest in the sport has led to a robust roster for the Harris Street Reserve-based club.

  • Three new players - Gabriel Rofaeel, Lachlan Pontefract, and Glen Sproule - will play a critical role in the grand final.
  • Simmons expressed, “Football is growing so much down here and we’ve had lots of new lads at the club.”

Simmons also mentioned the increased standard of competition this season. “I think football in the south-west is improving rapidly which is great to see,” he said. With their undefeated streak coming into the 2023 decider, the Wolves are eager to secure victory after last year's unexpected defeat against the Rivals Warrnambool Rangers.

The Challenge Ahead: Facing Portland Panthers

Simmons highlighted the challenges posed by Portland Panthers: “They are really good at sitting and absorbing pressure.” The Panthers are noted for their quick breaks, making them a formidable opponent. “They have some young wingers who are just eager to get at you,” he added.

With important lessons learned from last year's finals, the Wolves are focused and ready. “Last season was my first year here and I loved it,” Simmons recalled, reflecting on his journey with the club. That passion encourages him and his team as they prepare for the final.

Join us for an exhilarating showdown this Sunday, September 15, at Pedrina Park in Hamilton.
