Exploring the Unique 4G Services Challenge for BSNL Users - The 5G Phone Dilemma

BSNL has announced its intention to roll out 4G services, but users may encounter a peculiar situation – the need for a 5G phone to access these services. The operator plans to utilize two spectrum bands: 2,100 MHz for traditional 4G connectivity and 700 MHz for potential future 5G applications. The government has allocated 700 MHz for 4G use, but as BSNL's transitions proceed, customers face uncertainty over device compatibility.

Currently, the 700 MHz band remains underdeveloped in terms of suitable devices, which affects user access. While Reliance Jio has acquired, but not deployed, the 700 MHz band for its 5G services, BSNL aims to facilitate future availability by advising manufacturers to build smartphones compatible with both 4G and 5G technologies.

With an estimated 1,000+ handset models already supporting the 700 MHz band, consumers are left to discern device compatibility independently. Nevertheless, BSNL is optimistic about its 4G networks and is scaling its infrastructure to enhance coverage, having established around 25,000 sites. The government’s revival packages totaling ₹3.2 lakh crore highlight significant efforts to bolster BSNL’s market share, targeting a goal of 25% by 2025.
