ChatGPT-Enhanced AI Assistant Coming to Volkswagen Vehicles
ChatGPT Enhanced AI Voice Assistant Launch
Volkswagen is rolling out its advanced in-car AI voice assistant, IDA, featuring both local processing and cloud-based responses through ChatGPT and other AI models, starting September 6th. The initial launch will include the 2025 Jetta and 2024 ID.4 with an 82kWh battery, with additional models set to receive the feature later this year.
Subscription Model and Future Models
To use ChatGPT with IDA, drivers in supported models must subscribe to VW's Plus Speech with AI service. Most of the 2025 lineup, including the ID.4 and ID Buzz, will feature these AI capabilities, with some models offered complimentary services for three years.
- Jetta and Jetta GLI require individual subscriptions.
- Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport won’t support ChatGPT until 2026.
Previously, during CES announcements, VW hinted at the ChatGPT integration plan, clarifying how the AI would function. When complex queries arise, interaction will switch from IDA to Cerence’s automotive chatbot solutions.
Local Processing Capabilities
Volkswagen claims IDA can locally process certain requests. For example, stating that one is “chilly” can efficiently adjust the vehicle’s heating without involving ChatGPT for unnecessary follow-ups.
