Desktop PCs – A Mini PC Revolution in Computing
Desktop PCs: A Shift in Perception
Earlier this year, I impulse-bought a tiny, inexpensive desktop PC for research purposes. I didn’t expect it to change my entire computing setup.
My Daily Workhorse
But here I am now, using the $300 Beelink SER5 Mini PC as my daily workhorse, powering an ultrawide 1440p 100Hz monitor and smoothly handling any productivity task I’ve thrown at it. This little computer has been so delightful to use that I’ve relegated my full-sized desktop tower PC to the basement television, where it’s now serving exclusively as a gaming rig.
Why Choose a Mini PC Over a Traditional Desktop?
- Much smaller footprint makes it easy to handle.
- Cost-effective solution for everyday tasks.
- Performance comparable to traditional computers.
- Quiet operation compared to larger desktops.
- Storage Expansion: 1TB SSD compatible.
- Upgradeable RAM for enhanced performance.
Consider this a lesson on technological overkill. Outside of some specialized use cases, the required compute power for getting things done might be a lot less than you think.
Specifications Matter
Size-wise, the Beelink SER5 is roughly on par with laptops in the $500 to $700 range, except of course you’ll have to supply your own mouse, keyboard, and screen. The 5x5-inch frame is small enough to pick up with one hand.
Going in, my plan was to briefly play around with the SER5’s default installation before going back to my regular desktop for work. The transition to daily work was so seamless that I never went back to my old computer at all.
Getting Work Done with Ease
The Beelink SER5 Mini PC handled all tasks without ever noticeably slowing down and it’s much quieter than my full-sized desktop. Even under heavier loads, like digitizing old VHS tapes and running a Plex media server, the performance remained solid.
Gaming on a Mini PC
Integrated Radeon graphics may not match dedicated cards, but the Beelink SER5 holds its own for gaming. Games like Yakuza Kiwami and Fortnite run smoothly, showcasing the mini PC's versatility.
The Takeaway
This mini PC experience reminds us that for many users, desktop PCs may be more power than necessary. Despite having just a mid-range processor, I was satisfied with my computing needs.
